GRANDLUXE EXPRESS TOURS TO

THE ROCKIES, THE NATIONAL PARKS AND MEXICO’S  COPPER CANYON

Featured Tour: THE ROCKIES, SIERRAS AND NAPA

All-inclusive private land cruise train from $4320.00

See below for new 2008 GRANDLUXE EXPRESS tours.

The former “American Orient Express” land-cruise train has a new name and wonderful new ownership. Hereafter the train will ply the rails as the aptly named GRANDLUXE EXPRESS. The service is now a subsidiary of Colorado Railcar, the builder of the new full-length dome cars used in the Canadian Rockies and Alaska.  Already, extensive renovations have been made to the train’s equipment and on-board amenities have been upgraded.  Itineraries have been redesigned to maximize daylight running over the most scenic lines, reducing time spent on buses.

The GRANDLUXE EXPRESS is comprised of lovingly restored cars from the great streamliners of the 1940s and 50s. Cars include equipment from legendary trains such as the Union Pacific’s “City of Los Angeles” and “Challenger” and the Chesapeake and Ohio’s “George Washington”.  The showcase cars are a full-length vista-dome lounge car from the Great Northern’s “Empire Builder” and the “New York” observation-lounge car with its stunning big-windowed Lookout Lounge. The latter car was built for the 1948 edition of the “world’s greatest train”, the New York Central’s “20th Century Limited”!

Car interiors are upgraded with elegant woods and luxurious furnishings. Many sleepers offer newly-built accommodations with en-suite showers, and the two diners offer true gourmet cuisine with complimentary fine California wines included at dinner. There are three lounge cars on each train, including a piano lounge (with live cocktail piano each evening), a mid-train dome-lounge car, and the observation-lounge on the rear of the train, so there is always plenty of space to relax and socialize. The atmosphere is unstuffy and casual. You never need to dress up on the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS.

Each journey on this wonderful train is a true land-cruise. The price includes all train travel; all meals; non-alcoholic beverages; wine with dinner; escort services; luggage handling; off-train sightseeing and informative lectures on the scenery and history en route.  For the value received, the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS is very fairly priced, as your cost is virtually all-inclusive. As on a cruise ship, several types of accommodations are offered. Prices vary by the category chosen on the train. .

We have a beautiful full-color catalog for these GRANDLUXE EXPRESS tours. Call us if you’d like a copy and remember to confirm at least 180 days before departure to save up to $300 per person!

Rail Travel Center® is again highlighting a wonderful series of departures across the Rockies and high Sierras in 2008.  Many of these dates travel at the peak of fall color, which typically comes in the last two weeks of September in the Rockies and in October in the canyons of western Colorado and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  This program follows the route of the “California Zephyr”, traveling by daylight over the Rockies on the rails of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad, accurately advertised as “The Mainline Thru the Rockies—Not Around”.  It continues on the former Central Pacific line, which was the first transcontinental railway. We ride the “Overland Route” by day over Donner Pass atop the high Sierras. A unique highlight is a journey on the normally freight-only Napa Valley Railroad from Suisan Fairfield, California to Napa and St. Helena. Regular passenger service ended on most of this line over 50 years ago! Complete details follow. All aboard!

Day 1 – Denver, Colorado (D)
Step into a railway world of adventure and excitement. Fly into the Mile High city of Denver, enjoying the city’s sights if you arrive early. Board the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS in late afternoon and toast the days to come during our Welcome Dinner in the dining car.

Day 2 Rail through the Colorado Rockies (B,L,D)
A daylight ride through the incomparable Rocky Mountains.
After breakfast aboard the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS, enjoy the show as the train traverses some of the country’s most stunning mountain scenery. We climb the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel. This tunnel shortened the original line by over 20 miles and took four years to “bore through” to its 1928 completion. We emerge at Winter Park in the Fraser Valley and follow the Colorado River through 200 miles of stunning canyons. In succession we traverse the Byers, Gore, Red, Glenwood and Palisade Canyons. The views of towering cliffs in Glenwood Canyon inspired the design of the first vista-dome car. We roll down the Western Slope into Grand Junction for dinner and overnight on the train, which is quietly parked in the station.

Day 3- Arches and Canyonlands National Parks (B,L,D)
Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.
After breakfast, we depart for the day, visiting Arches and Canyonlands National Parks by private motorcoach. These red rock wonderlands are home to the largest concentration of natural sandstone arches in the world. Highlights include Grandview Point, one of the most scenic spots in Canyonlands, and Balanced Rock, a precarious-looking 128-foot tower estimated to weigh 3,500 tons. After our day in the parks, we enjoy dinner as the train rolls west through the Book Cliff Basin and ascends the Wasatch Range. Dawn finds us in Salt Lake City.

Day 4- Salt Lake City, Utah (B,L,D)
Discover the many sides of Salt Lake City.
Our visit to Salt Lake City provides a chance to tour the Winter Olympics venues and visit Temple Square. Railfans can optionally ride the new Light Rail (trolley car) line. Other tours visit the surrounding Wasatch Mountain communities, including Robert Redford’s famous Sundance Resort. Re-board the train in the afternoon for dinner and a trip along the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake and across the Great Basin Desert en route to Reno, our stop for tomorrow’s visit to Lake Tahoe.

Day 5- Lake Tahoe, Nevada and the Sierra Nevada Mountains (B,L,D)
Cruise Lake Tahoe and cross Donner Pass.
We awake in Nevada and enjoy breakfast on the train before visiting spectacular Lake Tahoe. A boat cruise provides the perfect vantage point for admiring the Sierra Nevada Mountains surrounding this vast lake, eighth deepest in the world.  This afternoon we re-board the train and take a seat by the window for the spectacular ride over Donner Pass and the descent through the Sierras into California’s historic Gold Rush country. This is the legendary “Overland Route” of the first Trans-continental railway. As we crest the summit of Donner Lake and the American Fork Canyon, the vistas are awesome!

Day 6- Napa Valley, California (B,L,D)
Enjoy a taste of America’s culinary heartland in the Napa Valley.
Endless vineyards pass our windows as we travel the normally freight-only rails of the Napa Valley Railroad. Lunch is served in the Cask Room Cellar at the Merryvale Winery.  Long tables are set with vine covered candelabras in a cobblestone-lined cave filled with wine casks! Our three-course luncheon is paired with some of Merryvale’s best wines.  This afternoon we tour the Napa area, including a visit to Copia, the American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts. Copia was conceived by the famous vintner Robert Mondavi with assistance from Julia Child.  During our tour of Copia’s exhibits and gardens, we enjoy a lecture by a local sommelier or chef. Our Farewell Dinner is served in the elegant dining cars as we circuit the upper reaches of San Francisco Bay.

Day 7- Oakland, California (B)
A week of fabulous adventures ends.
After breakfast, the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS arrives in Oakland, the final stop on our rail tour. Extensions permit visits to San Francisco. Amtrak train connections or flights can be booked to all points.

Eastbound tours follow the same itinerary in the reverse direction.

In May and June, 2008 there are 10-day “National Parks of the West Tours” from Jackson, Wyoming to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  This program has been lengthened by one day for 2008 to add a visit to the Utah Parks. The tour visits Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce Canyon (or Zion, at your choice) and Grand Canyon National Parks; and Santa Fe, New Mexico, with hundreds of miles of “rare mileage” rides on normally freight-only lines of the Union Pacific Railroad. Prices begin at $5250 per person, double occupancy, if booked at least 6 months prior to departure.

In July, August and September, 2008 there are 9-Day “Great Northwestern National Parks Tours” from Jackson, Wyoming to Seattle, Washington.  These visit Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier and Mount Rainier National Parks with hundreds of miles of “rare mileage” rides on normally freight-only lines of the Union Pacific Railroad and Montana Railink. Montana Railink operates the very scenic former Northern Pacific Ry. through the Montana Rockies. Prices begin at $4710 per person, double occupancy if booked at least 6 months prior to departure.

The GRANDLUXE EXPRESS also offers an exciting late winter/early spring tour, “The Antebellum South”. These are 7-Day departures traveling from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans (or return) and featuring touring at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, in historic Savannah, Georgia, at the Vicksburg National Military Park or Natchez, Mississippi. These trips are priced from $4320 per person, double occupancy if booked at least 4 months prior to departure and operate on 6 dates beginning with a northbound itinerary March 9-15, 2008 and ending with a southbound trip April 13-19, 2008.

There is one departure per month in April, and July, 2008 of a wonderful new 7-day tour program, “Western and Pacific Coast Treasures”, which travels from Santa Fe/Albuquerque to Seattle (or visa versa). This remarkable tour visits Grand Canyon National Park, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, the Napa Valley, Sacramento (with a visit to the California State RR Museum) and Seattle and includes daylight running on the renowned former Southern Pacific “Coast Daylight” route directly along the bluffs above the Pacific, and on the “Cascade” line over the Cascade Range and along the shores of the Columbia River and Puget Sound to Seattle. Prices begin at only $4520 per person, double occupancy if booked at least 6 months prior to departure.

There is one departure of a shortened version of this tour, the “Pacific Coast Favorites”, southbound from Seattle to Sacramento and the Napa Valley, ending in San Francisco, September 27-30, 2008. This is the least expensive GLE tour, with prices beginning at only $2240 per person, double occupancy if booked at least 6 months prior to departure.

From December, 2008 to February, 2009 the GRANDLUXE EXPRESS explores Mexico’s remarkable “Copper Canyon” on a unique new tour from Chihuahua to Mazatlan. This is the only land-cruise train tour to cover the full-length of the Copper Canyon railway all the way from Chihuahua to Los Mochis and to offer a trip by train to Mazatlan. The tour includes touring in the canyon region at Creel and Divisadero. All travel over the Copper Canyon line is by day. Additional features exclusive to this tour are visits to Los Mochis to cruise Topolobompo Bay, to the colonial town of Alamos and to the lovely seaside village of San Carlos. Extensions can be easily arranged to enjoy the beaches at Mazatlan as well. Southbound departures from Chihuahua to Mazatlan operate December 14 and 28, 2007; and in 2009 on January 11 and 25 and on February 8.
